UK's Starmer Hosts 25-Nation Summit on Ukraine Peace Plan as Putin Sets Ceasefire Conditions
Peace talks hang in balance here
Putin plays his hand
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is convening a virtual summit of approximately 25 nations on March 15, 2025, to discuss implementing a potential peace deal for Ukraine, while Russian President Vladimir Putin has laid out specific conditions for accepting a proposed 30-day ceasefire.
The 'coalition of the willing' meeting includes representatives from Britain, France, Australia, Canada, NATO, and the European Union. The summit aims to coordinate international support for monitoring and enforcing any future peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine [1].
'If Russia finally comes to the table, then we must be ready to monitor a ceasefire to ensure it is serious and enduring peace,' Starmer stated ahead of the meeting. 'If they don't, then we need to strain every sinew to ramp up economic pressure on Russia to secure an end to this war.' [2]
Putin has described the principle of a ceasefire as 'correct' but insisted it must come with conditions, including Ukraine abandoning NATO membership aspirations and relinquishing control of regions seized by Russia [2]. The Russian leader also demanded that Western military aid to Ukraine be halted during any ceasefire period [3].
The summit follows Ukraine's acceptance of a U.S.-proposed 30-day ceasefire earlier this week. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the need for international pressure on Moscow, stating that Putin 'will try to drag everyone into endless discussions... while his guns continue to kill people.' [3]
G7 foreign ministers have warned Russia of new sanctions unless it accepts the ceasefire 'on equal terms,' with potential measures including oil price caps and additional support for Ukraine [3]. The European Union is separately considering a €40 billion military aid package for Ukraine [3].
